1. Hand Cream

One of the best remedies for dry hands is a good hand cream. Choose one that has a rich, moisturising formula. There are plenty of hand creams on offer to suit a range of skin types and budgets. Skin absorbs moisturiser better when it’s a bit damp, so apply hand cream after you wash your hands to help prevent them from drying out. Also remember to apply hand cream regularly if you work in an air conditioned space, as the dry atmosphere can affect the skin.

2. Moisturising Soap

Washing your hands frequently can dry them out, especially if you’re using harsh soaps. To remedy this, switch to a moisturising soap or hand wash. Avoid using regular dish soap or harsh chemical soaps (like the ones used in hospitals) where possible. Using a moisturising soap or hand wash will help in the battle against dry hands.

3. Lukewarm Water

Wash your hands in lukewarm water. Hot water can strip the skin of natural oils and dry it out. Washing your hands in lukewarm water is just one way to prevent the skin from drying out. Also, wash your hands as little as possible since too much exposure to water can dry them out.

4. Cuticle Oil

When hands dry out, it’s not only the skin that is affected. Your nails can suffer too. Dry nails can get brittle and break, and cuticles can crack. To combat this, apply cuticle oil to your nails regularly. Apply cuticle oil daily and apply it often.

5. Create a Physical Barrier

Stop hands drying out by creating a physical barrier. The easiest way to do this is to wear gloves. When you’re washing the dishes or cleaning, wear rubber gloves to stop your hands spending too much time in water and in contact with harsh detergents or chemicals. When you’re outside in the cold, slip on a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the harsh weather conditions.

6. Sleep in Gloves

If you’re hands are really dry then slip on a pair of cotton gloves while you sleep. This will help keep in the moisture and prevent hands from drying out. Moisturise hands first and then slip on the gloves before bed. When you wake up your skin will look and feel softer. It may feel a bit silly at first, but worth it if you’re serious about looking after your hands.

7. Drink Water

Another one of the key things to consider in the fight against dry hands is your water intake. We’re always told to drink plenty of water for supple, healthy looking skin. Drinking adequate amounts of water can also help prevent your skin from drying out. Keep your skin moisturised from the inside out and stay hydrated throughout the day.
